In August of 2010, the City Council acquired 196-200 Yantic Street in the historic Yantic Falls neighborhood. This acquisition put the city in control of both the east and west time of the Yantic Falls gorge and the landmark known as “Indian Leap.” A grassroots group was formed in an effort to see this site turned into a park. In 2011, this group was successful in securing funding from the State of Connecticut and the Sachem Fund. The funding enabled the creation of the Site Feasibility Report which was completed in 2012.

During the development of the report, it was determined that the area should be rebranded from Indian Leap to Uncas Leap. An implementation element was added to the final report, and since 2012, the Uncas Leap Steering Committee has been working to source funding to implement the recommendations.

In 2015, the City was able to source $270,000 in funding from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), while Norwich Community Development Corporation (NCDC) was able to source $23,000 from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. In addition, the City has allocated $146,500 from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program from this site.
